Looking around the 3rd Armored Division, a soldier will see many Spearheaders wearing distinctive skill patches on their right fatigue shirt pockets. These patches are special skill awards for soldiers doing excellent jobs or having unique skills.

Individuals or units may recommend the creation of a distinguished patch to the division commander. After approval by USAREUR, the patches are procured and issued to soldiers or units recommended for the specific skill patch.

In addition to the patches shown on this page, there are patches for other skills already on the drawing board, according to division officials. Some patches, such as the Distinguished Surveyor Patch, have been approved and are awaiting production.

Added to the approved list are the TOW Cobra Qualification Patch and the Aerial Scout Qualification Patch.

For the Distinguished Platoons there is another patch on the drawing board. When approved it will provide wider recognition for the selected platoons.
