From Frank R. Shirer in 2005:
Divarty S-2, 3AD
When I arrived at the 2nd Bn, 27th FA, 3rd Brigade, (Friedberg)
in September 1975, we had a nuclear mission. Our nuclear rounds
were stored at Fliegerhorst Kaserne in Hanau. I remember that
we sent a team from our battalion to engage in quarterly exercises
to practice procedures of emergency destruction of those stored
weapons. I also served as a custodial agent at the facility into
1978.
The weapons were still at Fliegerhorst and under the 'guardianship'
of the 3rd AD Divarty when I returned to the division from 1983
to 1987. After I became the Divarty S-2, I made periodic visits
to inspect the records of the Divarty's MP Company that had the
mission of guarding the facility.
NOTE: Frank is now Chief, Historical Resources
Branch, U.S. Army Center of Military History (CMH).
