Soldiers were transferred from ship to train right on the
dock and were transported directly to Frankfurt, Friedberg, Hanau,
Gelnhausen, or Kirch-Goens. Pictured above is the USS General
H.W. Butner.
Wolfgang Scherp, who sent us this photo in 2004, writes:
"After a 5-day voyage from Brooklyn Army Terminal across
the Atlantic, the soldiers of 3AD's Combat Command "B"
reached the Bremerhaven Port of Embarkation. We got off the ship
and boarded a nearby military train, pulled by a steam locomotive
of the German Bundesbahn (Federal Railways), that took us the
300 miles south to our new garrison, Coleman Kaserne at Gelnhausen."
