Gen. Hodges (left) and Maj. Gen. Maurice Rose,
3rd Armored Division commander, at a ceremony at the Mauser Estate
between Remagen and Honnef after the 3AD had completed its Rhine
crossing. The date was 24 March 1945. Six days later Rose would
be killed in the advance on Paderborn, and on April 2 Hodges
flew to Rose's burial ceremony at Ittenbach, Germany. (NARA photo) |

it was Gen. Hodges who first met the Russians. The date was 30
April 1945 at Torgau, Germany, on the Elbe River. At right is
