Pillbox Encounter - October, 1944
Among the first Allied probes of the infamous "Forest of Death"

  Kibler wrote: "This was east of Stolberg, Germany, where the 3rd Armored Div. was headquartered. Jim Lowe and I were on patrol along the northeast edge of the Hurtgen Forest. We were watching these four 3rd Armored tanks attack this pillbox, which had command of a wide area. These four tanks rushed it, firing as they advanced. Two went close and, when we took this picture, there were 25 Jerries surrendering with a big white flag. They were already out of the pillbox."

NOTE: The yellow arrow points to the pillbox, and, what appear to be several tanks, are to its lower left in an open area. Due to the grainy quality of the original print, an extreme enlargement did not make the Germans visible, nor did it make the tanks more distinct.
