The camp was liberated by the 3AD on April 11,
1945, with about 250 ill and starving prisoners still alive,
while hundreds were found dead, lying within the compound. Division
troops remained in the area for several days before continuing
toward Dessau, with First Army support troops moving in to assume
control the area, including the nearby German rocket-assembly
plant. Prisoners from the camp had been forced to work in the
plant. Thousands of those workers and others held in the camp
would die before the liberation. |
