Captured intact on March 7, 1945, by soldiers
of the U.S. 9th Armored Division, and providing the first gateway
across the Rhine River, the bridge collapsed unexpectedly on
March 17, 1945, killing 20 U.S. Army engineers who were working
to strengthen it. |
