1945, Russ shot this scene from his M-16 half-track. A lone female
pedestrian takes a stroll along a sidewalk that the efficient
Germans had already cleared. Cologne, which is on the west bank
of the Rhine River, was captured by the 3rd Armored Division
and was the first major German city to fall to the Allies. (Photo
