Late on the afternoon of March 30, 1945, the 3AD's Task Force Welborn rolled in from the south (lower left of photo) and began its ill-fated "short-cut" to Paderborn through the area indicated above by "Schloss Hamborn" (Castle Hamborn). Lying in wait for an ambush was a sizable German force. In the ensuing battle and chaos, as night was falling, General Rose was killed at the spot "Rose Point" on the road toward Kirchborchen.
