1983 UPDATE:
OUR ARCHIVES PROJECT
AT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

by
Paul W. Corrigan
SECRETARY-TREASURER
3rd ARMORED DIVISION ASSOCIATION

ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER: JUNE, 1983

Our archives project is well underway with some excellent material. For new members and others who have mislaid the February and August 1982 Newsletters, the following if taken from these letters.

Professor Brichford, University of Illinois archivist thinks now is the time to get material into archival control. He would like advance notice of published material. This will avoid preparation and shipping costs for duplicate material. Personal items such as letters, diaries, photographs and clippings from home town newspapers (except major papers with national circulation) are examples of items to send without prior notice. Copies of Stars and Stripes, Yank and the New York Times would fall in the published category as would unit histories. Lists of such items with dates of publication should be sent for checking for duplication before shipment.

Only documentary material should be sent - no hard display, such as medals, weapons, equipment, articles of uniforms, colors, banners. There is no display space available for such material.

1. Correspondence - note name, rank and unit of writer, date and place of writing, name and relationship of addressee - mother, wife, friend, etc.

2. Diaries and Journals - name, rank and unit of writer, date and place, if not noted in the entries.

3. Orders and Unit records (including military publications) - name the individual donor - identify: officer and NCO, note books containing notes of oral orders given at Staff Conferences or elsewhere. Identify by name, rank, unit, date and place.

4. Photographs - note names, ranks and units of individuals, date and place taken. Where possible refer to pages in Spearhead where the action is described.

5. Maps - marked, overlays, sketches, route maps of units (archives has some of these-inquire before sending duplicates) - identify by date, place and donor (name, rank and unit).

6. Propaganda material - Allied and German - note place used - other identification as above.

7. Captured items - orders, maps, identification papers, etc.

8. Newspaper clippings - hometown papers, Stars and Stripes, Yank - date and place of publication. Most of our clippings are now yellow and brittle with age. Send original clippings which the library can photocopy on good paper.

9. Articles and books - historical.

10. Other e.g., citations for decorations, unit Christmas cards, Newsletters, travel literature. All items should be arranged in chronological order in their category. Send originals and make copies for yourself, if desired. Pictures can be copied too.

A control record will serve as a finding aide for each category. Each donor will be sent a letter of acknowledgment.

Newsletter Editor's Note: What a great opportunity to preserve our World War II actions. Look through your Army STUFF and get material to the archivist.
