Division WWII Historian
SUBJECT: A call for more materials & financial
donations for our University of Illinois archives
Dear Spearhead Friends and Families,
Please spend some time in this website section getting acquainted
with our excellent archive facilities at the University of Illinois.
The 3rd Armored Div. WWII collection is impressive, and the fund
that supports its permanent care is substantial and sound. And
yet we can, and should, do more.
Please do a 3rd Armored "formal inspection" of your
household for WWII memorabilia and other materials that fall
under these categories: unit rosters and other Division documents
and reports, photographs (please caption), correspondence, diaries,
scrapbooks, maps, propaganda (U.S. and German), travel records,
training materials, reunion souvenirs, newspaper & magazine
articles, and more.
You can read further in this 3AD.com website section, and
also through a link to the University of Illinois 3AD Archives, on what
to send, and, in some cases, what not to send (such as uniforms,
weapons, and other military hardware). A donation of materials
to our Archives is both a tribute to the 3rd Armored and a reassurance
to yourself and your family that these treasured items will be
permanently preserved and never forgotten.
In addition, a financial donation of any size to the Andrew
Barr WWII Archives Fund would also be greatly appreciated, and
will, of course, be acknowledged by the University. Donations
have ranged from $25 and into the thousands, and any amount helps.
The late Andrew Barr, of Division Hq G2 (Intelligence) and my
boss in WWII, did much to help create the Archives and its Trust
Fund.
Below are two important addresses, that are shown again on
the University Library website:
