 Special Note: Beginning
in the summer of 2005, many new images and documents will be
gradually posted to our website, courtesy of the University Library
and its Archives Research Center.
Through an agreement in 1981 between Spearhead WWII veterans
and the University of Illinois, the University Library provides
archival services for the 3rd Armored Division Association.
Establishment of a Trust Fund through contributions from those
veterans and their families supports the project, with most generous
donations having been received over time from Andrew Barr and
Association historian Haynes Dugan. These two former members
of Division Headquarters in WWII also played a key role in initial
plans for the scope and collection of the historical materials.
The archives have grown into a remarkable collection of 3rd Armored
WWII unit records, maps, photos, books, films, diaries, and more.
There is also a collection of Association Newsletters covering
1948 to present, reunion items, and other post-WWII materials,
to include 3AD involvement in the Cold War and Gulf War. These
are available to the public by appointment at the Archives Research
Center located on the University's Urbana campus.
Please see the Center's 3rd Armored website for further information, including
detailed inventories of the holdings and the procedure for continued
donations to the Trust Fund, which could be no finer way to give
tribute to 3rd Armored WWII veterans.
The University of Illinois Archives (apart from the 3rd Armored
collection) is one of the leading university archives in the
U.S. It is a vast storehouse of materials of modern American
intellectual, cultural, and social history, as well as abundant
research sources in the areas of political science, economy,
science and technology, agriculture, American music, and more.
The 3rd Armored collection is in most capable and professional
hands, and its preservation can be expected literally for centuries
to come. |
