203mm (8-inch) M110 howitzer at Grafenwoehr - 1967
2nd Bn, 3rd Artillery, 3rd Armored Division

Above, for technical buffs: Division
headquarters photographer Vic Damon invented a novel, side-angle,
shell-stopping technique with a Nikon-F 35mm: (1) use shutter
speed of 1/1000 sec. with a right-to-left focal-plane shutter
to match a right-to-left movement of the shell, (2) stand within
50 degrees off-line of barrel direction, which violates Army
artillery safety procedures, but is necessarily within perimeter
of muzzle shock-wave, (3) brace arms tightly to chest, (4) apply
99.9% finger pressure on shutter button, and (5) wait for blast
shock-wave, which precedes the shell and in a nanosecond causes
the finger tip to automatically fire the shutter. This photo
appeared in Stars & Stripes and the Army Times,
and has been part of a permanent display at the Army Artillery
Museum at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. |
