Combat action in Newark, NJ - 1967

PIO staffer Bud Lee's Life Magazine cover of
July 28, 1967, and two of the five inside shots are included
here because, although separated from the Army at the time, he
was still in the Inactive Reserves, and was still under the heavy
influence of his PIO training. The 12-year-old boy on the cover
survived and eventually recovered fully. He suffered shotgun
pellets to the neck and thigh. In the same incident, a police
officer shot a fleeing 24-year-old looter within eighty feet
of where Bud was standing. The man died at the scene. |
