Sp5 Joe Cyr is pictured on a brief "R&R"
that included West and East Berlin. The small garden next to
the Berlin Wall (2nd photo below) was a memorial to someone killed
near that spot while trying to escape East Berlin. Further below
is Joe's rail ticket for the return to Frankfurt. It still seems
hard to believe that, even in the thick of the Cold War, American
GI's were allowed inside East Berlin on bus tours. |
