"The kids were from a nearby town on the southern edge
of the Hohenfels infantry training area. That's Dieter on my
right. The PIO and the 143rd Signal Photo Lab were separate from
any other unit and virtually unsupervised. Signal had a complete
photo lab in a 2.5 ton truck. During six weeks at that location,
we got very well acquainted with the townspeople and farm families,
who would invite us into their homes for dinner. Several of us
even dated some of the local women. A nearby brewery delivered
beer to our camp. What a life."
