Publishing the Spearhead required a weekly trip
from Frankfurt to Stars & Stripes in Darmstadt, some 30 miles
south. Above, David Flister (right), then Spearhead Editor, and
Ken Robinson are engrossed in proofreading galley sheets in the
Stripes composing room. That would be followed by final typesetting
using the still-high-tech, hot-lead process. Smoking pipes were
part of the uniform for budding journalists at the time. |
