ABOVE: Sp5 Eric Meskauskas, at
his 3rd Armored Division headquarters PIO desk at Drake Kaserne,
Frankfurt, West Germany, in 1967, was at the crossroads of his
life. His 3-year enlistment was about to end. Should he re-up
for SSgt. E-6 and a $5,000 bonus, plus a guarantee of seeing
the real action he's always wanted in Vietnam? Or, should he
take a "European out" in Frankfurt and accept being
a coward for the rest of his life? For the next three days, he
